[/align]</H2></H2>Only 12% of young people ever go to mosques

25% of those interviewed, mainly residents of Tehran, said they have never been in a mosque in their life.
Shahrzadnews:While the government is calling on local councils to organise cultural events to encourage mosque attendance, a Shahrzad News survey has found that only 12% percent of young Iranians ever attend prayers at their mosque.
The survey, conducted by telephone in six major Iranian cities, also found that of the 46% of the population who do attend, most only do so for funeral and memorial services. Many who had visited a mosque recently did so just to use the lavatory, as there are few public facilities in Iranian cities. Male visitors to mosques were outnumbered by females, 36% of whom said they preferred to pray at a mosque than at home. 25% of those interviewed, mainly residents of Tehran, said they had never been in a mosque in their life. Over a hundred Iranians, half from Tehran and the rest from Sari, Qum, Shiraz, Isfahan and Mashad took part in the survey.
The findings of Shahrzad News surveys on various social, cultural and political trends have often been dismissed by the Iranian regime. The pro-government news websites Shafaf and Tabnak have repeatedly warned their readers not to take part in our surveys. However the vast majority of those approached were happy to take part in the survey, once they had been assured of our independence.
